August 30th, 1995, it’s a sad days we lose guitarist Sterling Morrison from the Velvet Underground the day after his 53rd birthday.
Today in 1993, David Letterman and Billy Joel both have a first. It’s David Letterman’s first show on CBS and his first musical guest, Billy Joel. And he introduces Billy by saying something along the lines of, not only is he married to a leggy supermodel, but he also has the hottest album in the country, “River of Dreams.” Of course, the leggy supermodel David’s talking about is Billy’s now ex-wife, Christie Brinkley. And “River of Dreams” is actually an album that Christie did the artwork for the album cover.
On this day in 1973, The Doors call it quits. Now it’s been two years since Jim Morrison passed away. They put out two albums without him and they just realized there’s no point at this time in carrying on.
And today in 1969, there’s a band from Birmingham, England. Their name is Earth. They changed their name on that day to Black Sabbath. The way it happens, they’re on stage, their singer Ozzy Osbourne announces we are Black Sabbath and that’s all it took.
