August 28th, 1965, The Rolling Stones signed a management deal with Alan Klein on the same day that they signed to Decca Records.
Today in 1964, The Beatles smoked pot for the first time. Now, to be honest, it seems kind of crazy that people would know this down to the day, but here’s the story. The Beatles had just done a show at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in Queens, New York. They go back to their hotel on Park Avenue in Manhattan, the Delmonico Hotel. Bob Dylan came down from Woodstock with his tour manager to meet the band. At the hotel, he brings pot with him. He goes and offers it to the band to smoke and they say they’ve never smoked before. And Bob’s kinda shocked and he says to John Lennon, What about that song you have about getting high? And John says, What song are you talking about? And he starts telling him the lyrics and he realizes he’s talking about, “I Wanna Hold Your Hand.” And John confesses that the lyric is actually, “I can’t hide”, not I get high. So Bob offers a joint to John who politely declines and says, give it to Ringo because he’s my royal taster. Paul McCartney gets stoned. He’s walking around the hotel room asking his tour manager to write down everything he says. And that’s pretty much how it went down the first time that the Beatles got stoned.
We take a look at today’s calendar. We find a rock birthday on it. Born today in Jacksonville, Florida. Founding member and lead guitarist from Molly Hatchet, the late Dave Hlubek.
