Today in 1982, Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” debuts in theaters. It stars Bob Geldof of the Boomtown Rats, who would later go on to spearhead Band-Aid and Live Aid.
Also today in 1982, My good buddy George Thorogood releases his album “Bad to the Bone.” The title track, which George has told me, he wrote with Muddy Waters in mind, although Muddy’s people weren’t interested in it. Bo Diddley was interested in recording it, but he didn’t have a record deal, and at the time EMI Records wanted to sign George, and they wanted to sign him on the strength of the song “Bad to the Bone.” So they did sign him and release it, and Bo Diddley, who had wanted to record it, ends up showing up in the video.
Today in 1978 at Wimbledon Stadium, Queen holds a photo shoot with 65 nude models. They do it for the artwork for their single, “Bicycle Race.”
Today in 1967, the Doors appear on The Ed Sullivan Show. They are asked to change the lyrics to Light My Fire, which they notoriously do not do as depicted in the Oliver Stone movie “The Doors.”
Also today in 1967, the Who appear on the Smothers Brothers Show. They rig the bass drum of Keith Moon’s drum kit to explode at the end of my generation. There’s a little bit of extra charge put into it. damages Pete Townsend’s hearing, and it also startles a couple of other guests on the show of Bette Davis and Mickey Rooney.
