Still listening: Fan-favorite ‘Frasier’ revival in the works after 17-year hiatus

It’s been nearly two decades since Dr. Frasier Crane dispensed psychiatric advice over Seattle’s airwaves, but a revival of the long-running comedy series bearing the name of everyone’s favorite fictional shrink appears to be just what the doctor ordered.

“There has long been a call from fans for its return, and that call is now answered,” David Stapf, president of CBS Studios, told BBC News.

The formal announcement that Paramount Plus has ordered the “Frasier” revival was made Wednesday during ViacomCBS’ investor day presentation.

“Having spent over 20 years of my creative life on the Paramount lot, both producing shows and performing in several, I’d like to congratulate Paramount+ on its entry into the streaming world,” original series star Kelsey Grammer, who intends to reprise his role, told Variety.

“I gleefully anticipate sharing the next chapter in the continuing journey of Dr. Frasier Crane,” Grammer said.

“Frasier, ” a spinoff of the long-running, Boston-set “Cheers,” ran for 11 seasons and captured 37 Emmy Awards – including five for best comedy series – before ending its run in 2004, BBC News reported.

The series also starred David Hyde Pierce, Jane Leeves and Peri Gilpin, none of whom are currently attached to the revival, Variety reported.

Meanwhile, John Mahoney, who played Crane patriarch Martin Crane, died in 2018.
