According to the Patriot-News and WPMT, the incident occurred around noon on Valentine’s Day at the child’s home on Sycamore Street in Swatara Township. Police received a report of a shooting and arrived to find the injured boy, authorities said.

Emergency crews rushed him to the hospital, where he died Thursday, Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo told the news outlets.

Although police have not publicly released details about how the shooting occurred, they said the boy’s parents and 10-year-old brother also lived in the residence, the Patriot News reported. The children had learned about gun safety, and the parents had secured all but one of their firearms, which was hidden, Chardo told the newspaper.
