According to WPBN and WLUC, the incident occurred about 8 p.m. Tuesday at a residence in Lakefield Township on the Upper Peninsula. Michigan State Police arrived to find the girl dead and determined that her 14-year-old brother had shot her while their parents were away, authorities said.

Police arrested the teen, who faces an open murder charge, the news outlets reported. He remains in the Sault Tribal Juvenile Detention Facility, authorities said.

“The allegations in the charge support that this wasn’t accidental,” police spokesman Lt. Mark Giannunzio told WPBN.
