According to WHBQ-TV, the Memphis Zoo announced that a female reticulated giraffe calf was born to parents Wendy and Niklas on Monday. Staffers named the healthy newborn Milele, the Swahili word for “forever,” because they “have waited forever for her arrival,” the zoo said in a news release Thursday.

“Wendy has been showing signs for the past couple of months that she was ready to give birth, so our animal care team has been prepared for this baby for a while,” the release said, adding that the youngster “was definitely worth the wait.”

Milele has had her first veterinary exam and is ready to meet her father, half-siblings Ja Raffe and Ali, and the rest of the herd, the zoo said.

“Milele is a spunky calf who is already showing signs of being a sassy little girl,” the release added.
