Lifeguards carry 95-year-old beachgoer to her spot every day

A 95-year-old woman from Indiana and her daughter went on a beach getaway, but there was one problem. The older woman, who uses a wheelchair, couldn’t walk down to the water.

Her daughter has a bad wrist and was having a difficult time getting the chair through the thick sand from their hotel to the edge of the water, AL.com reported.

That was when lifeguards at Orange Beach in Alabama jumped to Dottie Schneider’s rescue.

“Our guards have been instructed to try to help people out if they’re having a tough time, Brett Lesinger, Orange Beach safety division chief told AL.com.

Shane Martin offered Schneider a ride in his beach patrol vehicle to get the perfect beach spot.

Martin then lifted the 79-pound Schneider, who had a stroke in 2017, from the vehicle to the awaiting beach chair.

Martin’s kindness was shared on the Orange Beach Surf Rescue Facebook page.

He then gave her the office number so Schneider could get a ride each morning during her and her daughter’s stay, Fox News reported.

Every day, guards would coordinate to get Schneider and her daughter to their favorite area of the beach. One lifeguard, Shane Martin, made it his mission to be there each time.

“They were faithful. They were there. It made my mom’s whole trip,” Kimberly Waterbury told AL.com.

The guards also made sure Schneider, whom they nicknamed Ms. Dottie, was comfortable during her time in the sun.

“Any day she felt like coming down, we wanted to make sure she got there,” Lesinger told AL.com. “We told her to holler if the sun was too much.”

Their act of caring gave Waterbury a break too.

She could “just be a daughter. I was not a caregiver. I was her daughter,” Waterbury said.

To repay their kindness, Waterbury and Schneider made sure that the lifeguards were left with a full refrigerator of food and drinks, WVTM reported.
