Officers responded around 9:30 p.m. to a report of a woman in distress in the 300 block of Hilltop Drive. When they arrived, they said they found an infant and another young child with multiple stab wounds.

Authorities said the infant died at the scene. The other child, whose age was not released, was taken to a hospital and last listed in critical condition, according to police.

Police Chief Steve Drew described the scene Tuesday as “horrific.”

“Any loss of life is difficult, but it’s especially challenging when it involves innocent children,” he said.

Officers arrested the mother of the children, identified as 35-year-old Sarah Whitney Ganoe, on one count of second-degree murder, one count of malicious wounding and two counts of felony child neglect.

Police continue to investigate.
