Coronavirus: Total US COVID-19 cases top 23 million as death toll surpasses 383,000

Total novel coronavirus cases in the United States eclipsed 23 million Wednesday, marking the third consecutive four-day cycle with 1 million new cases, according to a Johns Hopkins University tally.

The 23,029,450 cumulative U.S. cases reported late Wednesday represent one-quarter of the more than 92 million global cases, with the U.S. confirming 3 million new cases in the past 12 days.

Meanwhile, virus-related deaths in the U.S. also swelled Wednesday to nearly 384,000, representing roughly 19% of the nearly 2 million global COVID-19 fatalities recorded to date.

Per the latest figures, Texas became the second state to surpass 2 million cases on Wednesday.

The hardest-hit states remain California with more than 2.8 million cases, resulting in 31,163 deaths; Texas with more than 2 million cases, resulting in 30,917 deaths; Florida with more than 1.5 million cases, resulting in 23,396 deaths; New York with nearly 1.2 million cases, resulting in 40,063 deaths; and Illinois with more than 1 million cases, resulting in 19,617 deaths.

Ten other states have reported at least half a million cases, including Ohio, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, North Carolina, Arizona, New Jersey, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin. Meanwhile, another 13 states have reported fewer than half a million cases but more than 300,000 cases, including Massachusetts, Missouri, Minnesota, Virginia, Alabama, South Carolina, Colorado, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Maryland, Utah, Kentucky and Iowa.
