Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT): Implications for Lumbar Mobility, Stability, and Direction of PreferenceSaturday, April 6- Sunday, April 7, 20138:00 am - 5:00 pm8:00 am - 4:00 pm  Location:  Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital                        Assembly 1&2                        3599 University Blvd, S                        Jacksonville, FL  32216 Course Description:   This Fellowship program course is designed to provide an analysis regarding  Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) classification, evidence,  and outcomes, and how this approach relates to Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy.  The course will guide clinicians in the analysis of movement dysfunction and therapeutic exercise based on repeated end range spinal movements, centralization, and direction of preference.  The course will involve both lecture and laboratory sessions and will compare and contrast MDT and manual physical therapy schools of thought. The course also includes patient demonstration, analysis and discussion. The principle format is lecture, discussion and live patient demonstrations. Course Objectives:At the end of this course, participants will be able to: ·         Describe the cardinal features of the McKenzie approach of Mechanical Diagnosis and therapy and contrast it to other treatment approaches. Analyze the findings from a subjective examination, active and repeated end range spinal movements to arrive at a MDT classification.Synthesize movement examination findings to classify the condition and develop an exercise strategy for the patient based on centralization and direction of preference.Demonstrate manual physical therapy procedures based on patient response.Discuss the current literature regarding the validity and reliability of MDT as a patient response method.  Instructor(s): Ron Schenk PT, PhD, OCS, FAAOMPT, Dip MDT Intended Audience: Physical Therapists CEUs:  14 Contact Hours (1.4 CEUs) for Physical Therapists Timed Agenda: Day 1: 8:00-8:15 am             Course introduction8:15-8:45                  Commonalities in Spinal Classification Systems:                                Muscle Balance, Australian, Nordic Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT)8:45-9:15 am              MDT Model - Operational Definitions9:15-10:00 am            Evidence for Physical Therapy Classification10:00-10:15 am          Break10:15 am-11:00          Evidence for Centralization11:00-11:30                 Mechanical Examination - Subjective11:30-12:00 pm          Mechanical Examination - Structural, Postural, Active (patient response)                             12:00-1:00                   Lunch1:00-1:45                     Mechanical examination - Repeated End Range (patient response)1:45-2:15                     Mechanical examination - Neurological, Special tests2:15-2:30                     Break2:30-3:15                  MDT Classification - Evidence3:15-4:00                   Direction of Preference - Evidence4:00-4:30                    Exercise prescription based on direction of preference                             4:30-5:00                   Questions and Day 1 summary Day 2:  8:00-8:30 am            The Lateral Compartment -Evidence                               8:30-9:00                   Testing for the lateral compartment9:00-9:30                   Models for OMPT9:30-10:00                 MDT Progression of forces10:00-10:15              Break10:15-10:30             Tissue remodeling - Evidence10:30-11:00              MDT manual technique - sagittal plane 11:00-11:30              MDT manual technique  - frontal plane11:30-12:00 pm       MDT Manual technique - transverse plane12:00-1:00 pm         Lunch 1:00-1:30                  MDT management of the SIJ1:30-2:00                  Provocation testing of the SIJ - Evidence2:00-2:30                  SIJ direction of preference2:30-2:45                  Break2:45-3:00                  Stabilization evidence3:00-3:30                  MDT and stabilization3:30-4:00                  Course summary  Brooks Clinicians 154.74 Non-Brooks Participants 303.37 Student 93.24
