Conservative management of Urinary Incontinence, beyond the basic “Kegel” August 10, 20138:00 AM- 5:00 PM Location: Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital Assembly 1&2 3599 University Blvd, S Jacksonville, FL 32216 Course Description: This course will supply a comprehensive review of pelvic cavity anatomy and the physiology of micturition. It will offer an in depth look at supportive dysfunction of the pelvic floor muscles, with emphasis on urinary incontinence. It will provide a comprehensive evidence based approach to treatment of urinary incontinence using behavior management strategies, dietary modifications, pelvic floor muscles training and electrical stimulation. The use of objective outcome measures, functional goal writing and documentation will be presented. Course Objectives: After completion of this course the participant will be able to:· Describe normal anatomy and function of female pelvic floor. · Describe the physiology of micturition, types of urinary incontinence (UI) and pelvic organ prolapse (POP). · All participants will differentiate signs and symptoms of different types of UI including stress, urge, and mixed UI.· Identify appropriate and non-appropriate candidates for conservative management of UI and POP.· Differentiate between musculoskeletal and medical causes UI and POP, including identifying Red/Yellow flags.· Describe the medical management of UI and POP· Properly assess pelvic floor muscles (PFM) externally and provide appropriate progression of strength training.· Develop rehabilitation goals for musculoskeletal impairments in patients with UI and POP.· Develop strategies for rehabilitation treatment of pelvic floor muscle impairments including for UI and POP based on history and physical examination.· Identify indication/contraindications for use of electrical stimulation for UI· Demonstrate proper set up/parameters of external electrical stimulation for the management UI symptoms.
